A breakdown of the XXX domain drama

Today I wrote about how some organizations, including the University of Missouri are buying domain names meant for adult entertainment websites.

Confused?

Here’s what you need to know: Anyone who has a website owns that website’s domain name. Facebook.com is one example. There are a bunch of different domains out there (think .com, .gov, .org, etc.) Each domain gives you some clue as to what is going to be on the websites that you visit.

Recently, ICANN, the global organization that basically manages all the different domains, allowed ICM Registry to start selling websites under the domain .xxx. You can guess what websites with an xxx extension would likely have.

So to avoid having, um…racy material associated with the University of Missouri, the IT Department bought up three names (mizzou.xxx, missouritigers.xxx and missouri.xxx) to block them from becoming pornographic sites.

In the initial buying period, almost 80,000 companies purchased names under the .xxx domain, but ICM won’t say how many of those were companies buying names out of fear.

Seems like a pretty brilliant business plan, no?
